Guests at the Thursday night premiere of English Vinglish — Sridevi’s comeback film — who waited in the foyer of the theatre for Amitabh and Jaya Bachchan to arrive, were rewarded by the expression on the superstar’s face when he first caught sight of Sridevi.

His eyes widened and his jawdropped. “Kamal kar diya apne. You are looking stunning,” he said, as Sridevi, who looked fabulous in a cream lace mermaid-cut outfit, blushed.

Jaya Bachchan, Sridevi’s husband Boney Kapoor, and director of English Vinglish Gauri Shinde, stepped back discreetly to allow the superstar and his former leading lady to chat and exchange jokes. “Any kind of compliment coming from him (Bachchan) is encouraging and inspiring,” an elated Sridevi told HT Café the morning after the premiere. “He saw the film last week, but it was sweet of him to come and support me again last night.”
